On Sunday, September 12th, over a dozen Freedom Fighters of the Warsaw Rising '44 gathered in uniform for a Mass celebrated by Father Jerzy Frydrych at Nativity Church which was followed by an Awards Ceremony in the Church Hall.PACF President Caria Tomczykowska welcomed the gathered guests and Honorees. Honorary Polish Consul Christopher Kersoky represented the Consulate General in Los Angeles when he distributed beautiful Certificates in red-leather folders to each of them. His gift of a reproduction of Belotto's 1750 painting of "Warsaw from the Praga side" was enclosed and they also received the PACF's Commemoration Souvenir Booklet. Over 50 people shared the morning with them, as they raptly listened to AK President Zdzislaw Jarkiewicz recalled some of his experiences during the fall of 1944. Polish Poems by Czeslaw Milosz, Julian Tuwim, Edmund Jan Osmanczyk and Maria Pawlikowska, translated into English were read by Sara Kerosky, Maureen Morris, David Husar and Kazimierz Sobczak. At the close of that gathering, everyone adjourned to the San Francisco Main Library at Civic Center, where in the Koret Auditorium, Mr. Stanislaw Bala, Mrs. Halina Bala-Reuger, Mr. Edward Mroz, Mrs. Halina Lerski, Mrs. Krystyna Chciuk, Dr. Jan Belza, and Mr. Lech Reuger shared their stories from the Warsaw Rising '44. A short documentary film about that time clarified the treacherous experiences these people survived and answered the many questions about this little-known part of World War II history. Seven displays in the Auditorium illustrated the two-month long ravages of the city. At the conclusion, many of the 60 people in attendance went up to the 6th floor to see the PACF exhibit on "The 60th Anniversary of The Warsaw Uprising" which will be on display until October 28, 2004. The 20 page Souvenir Booklet is available for $5.00 (includ. s/h). Please Contact Us to order your copy. It is filled with pictures, articles and useful information on this subject. |
